I remember the good old days, when as a kid I would admire the stars in my grandfather’s village during our evening walks. When my uncle would join, he’d point out the constellations in the sky and tell me facts about stars while I listened excitedly. I would look up in wonder at the sky as he pointed them out, Orion, the Big Dipper and so many more.

But now in the city, seeing a constellation is so rare that it makes me feel lucky. Looking out of my window at night, all I can see in the sky is a black canvas with a few white dots and a lonely moonβ€” a fate shared by the majority of the world’s population. It’s as if the stars have disappeared. But, of course, that’s not the case. They’re still there, just hidden.

Seeing a blanket of stars in the night sky has become a privilege. Something only possible in rural areas. Even for stargazing, you need to travel to the outskirts of the city. It brings up the unsettling question: Why are we so used to being under a boring, black sky?

Culture, Mythology, and the Vanishing Milky Way

I remember my mother telling me the story of Garuda, the king of birds and companion of Vishnu, associated with the Aquila constellation in Indian mythology. Long before telescopes and satellites, our ancestors projected their stories, beliefs, and identities onto the stars above them. Constellations became more than patterns in the sky, they became part of culture itself. From mythology and navigation to astronomy and astrology, stars have always been an important part of humanity.

Yet over 80% of the world’s population can no longer see these guiding lights, and in the United States and Europe, nearly everyone lives under skies brightened by artificial light. More than a third of humanity has never glimpsed the Milky Way from home, and the glow is only getting stronger, growing about 10% brighter each year in some regions, erasing stars we barely noticed. Migratory birds, insects, and even plants rely on natural night cues, and when those cues vanish, so do the ecosystem rhythms. Light pollution is an environmental pollutant in plain sight, often invisible because its effects are gradual but profound.

One of the quiet losses caused by light pollution is not scientific, but human. For centuries, the sky was a thing of wonder for human beings. A source of curiosity and inspiration. But the children of today who live in urban areas can’t see itβ€” the vast star-filled sky. They don’t have anything to look up and marvel at. The experience of seeing a star-filled sky is limited to screens, photos, and textbooks for them rather than a real-life experience. When stars disappear, it not only leaves a black canvas of a sky but a lack of wonder. And when this wonder disappears, so does curiosity and questions like why one star is brighter than the other. This loss is subtle, but it is very much there.

We often think of what children are exposed to, but rarely what they are deprived of. When we are reclaiming the night sky, we not only reclaim stars but a crucial part of humanity. Our history, future, and even curiosity.

Practical Solutions: Dark Sky Design & International Models

The problem is not light itself but how light is used. Cities need illumination for safety, commerce, and other modern-day uses. This, however, is not the problem. The solution to skyglow is intentional lighting. Putting lights where they are actually needed and only putting motion-sensor lights in less used areas will be a great help in reducing light pollution. Placing covers on top of lamps and streetlights will prevent the light from spilling off into the sky. Using warm, lower‑intensity bulbs can scatter less light in the atmosphere and preserve star visibility while still illuminating streets. Communities can start implementing dark sky ordinances in public areas like parks to further reduce skyglow. Each bulb we dim is a small step to preserving a piece of humanity, its history, and its future.

Consider Flagstaff, Arizona, renowned as the world’s first International Dark Sky City. It is a hub for astronomy, even today. It is home to the first U.S. dark-sky ordinance in the 1950s. Today, it maintains both functional lighting and a night sky dense with stars, showing that humans do not need to choose between safety and wonder. Solutions like this remind us that the stars are not gone foreverβ€” they are hidden, waiting for our attention and thoughtfulness.

India too has made its own efforts to reclaim the night sky. Hanle Dark Sky Reserve, declared a dark sky reserve in December 2022, became India’s first officially recognized dark sky zone. Located high in Ladakh’s cold desert, it has also emerged as a center for astrotourism, drawing visitors eager to witness a sky filled with stars rarely visible in modern cities. Similar initiatives are slowly gaining attention across the country, with several potential dark sky sites identified in Maharashtra and other states. These efforts show that the disappearance of stars is not irreversible. With thoughtful planning, communities can preserve both modern infrastructure and the night sky above them.

Conclusion: Darkness as a Natural Heritage

Some may argue that city lights are essential, that dimming streets risks safety and security. Yet studies show that well-designed, lower-intensity lighting can maintain safety while drastically reducing skyglow. This has even been proven by Flagstaff, Hanle, and other communities. The choice is not between night and danger, but between careless light and intentional illumination.

Looking up to see a sky of stars shouldn’t be a privilege. It should be something even city folk can see. We should see light as a tool to be used in moderation and darkness as a companion rather than danger. By balancing light and darkness, we can restore the sky we lost. We can look up at one of nature’s greatest masterpieces, a sky full of stars. We can preserve our connection to the stars, to nature, and the wonder that has inspired humans to dream and explore the cosmos.

I remember when the night sky felt endless. When my uncle pointed toward constellations and the darkness above us felt alive with stories, mystery, and possibility. Today, many children grow up beneath skies washed empty by artificial light, knowing the stars more through screens than experience. We often speak about preserving forests, rivers, and wildlife, yet rarely consider that the night sky is part of humanity’s natural heritage too. The stars are still there, hidden beyond the glow of our cities. But if we continue to treat darkness as something to erase, we may one day create a world where humanity no longer remembers to look up at all.
