Causes, Consequences, and the Road Ahead
The science is unambiguous: human activity has fundamentally altered the Earth’s energy balance. Climate change refers to long-term shifts in global temperatures and weather patterns. While natural variation has always existed, since the mid-20th century human activities have become the dominant driver — principally the burning of fossil fuels, industrial agriculture, and large-scale deforestation.
When we burn coal, oil, and natural gas, we release carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases act like a blanket around the Earth, trapping heat that would otherwise radiate into space. Since 1880, average global surface temperatures have risen by approximately 1.2°C. That number may sound small, but at planetary scale it is seismic.
What Warming Actually Means on the Ground
The consequences are not evenly distributed. Vulnerable communities in low-lying coastal nations, sub-Saharan Africa, and South and Southeast Asia face disproportionate threats — even though they have contributed least to the problem historically. The cruelest irony of the climate crisis is that those who bear the greatest burden are often those least responsible for it.
Extreme weather events are growing more frequent and severe. Wildfire seasons across Australia, Canada, and Southern Europe are lengthening. Glaciers from the Alps to the Himalayas are retreating at accelerating rates, threatening the freshwater supply of hundreds of millions of people.
The Carbon Budget and Mitigation Trajectories
Scientists have calculated a rough “carbon budget” — the total CO₂ we can still emit while keeping warming below 1.5°C, the more ambitious target set by the 2015 Paris Agreement. At current emission rates, that budget will be exhausted within roughly a decade. Current national commitments, even if fully honored, put us on a trajectory toward 2.5–3°C of warming by century’s end — a world fundamentally different from the one we inhabit today.
A Way Forward: Decarbonization and Adaptation
The technologies for decarbonization exist. Solar and wind energy costs have fallen by more than 90% in the past decade. What has lagged is political will. A rapid phase-out of fossil fuels is the single most impactful action humanity could take — paired with massive investment in adaptation for communities already living with the consequences of warming that is already locked in.
