Why do people still believe in superstitions in a world of science and technology?
To understand this question, we must first understand what superstition truly is and why it has endured through the ages.
A superstition is a belief that certain actions, objects, or events can influence our lives through luck or supernatural forces without reliable evidence. For centuries, such beliefs have been passed down from one generation to another, often becoming a part of cultural traditions.
For example, many people believe that a black cat crossing their path brings bad luck. However, black cats cross the paths of thousands of people every day, yet no consistent pattern of misfortune follows them. If this belief were true, everyone who encountered a black cat would experience the same outcome, which simply does not happen.
Similarly, some believe that breaking a mirror results in seven years of bad luck. In reality, a broken mirror is nothing more than a broken piece of glass. It may require careful cleaning to avoid injury, but there is no evidence that it can influence a person’s future.
Another common superstition is that the number 13 is unlucky. Yet countless successful events, achievements, and celebrations occur on the 13th of every month. A number has no power over human destiny; it is our actions and decisions that shape our lives.
Scientific Explanations vs. Supernatural Myths
Many incidents that are often attributed to superstition can, in fact, be explained by science.
For instance, some people believe that a solar eclipse is an evil omen and that stepping outside during an eclipse brings misfortune. In reality, a solar eclipse is a predictable astronomical event caused by the Moon passing between the Earth and the Sun. Scientists can calculate its exact date and duration years in advance, leaving no room for supernatural influence.
Similarly, some believe that diseases are caused by curses or evil spirits. Modern medicine has shown that illnesses are caused by microorganisms, genetic disorders, environmental factors, or lifestyle choices. Vaccines, antibiotics, and medical treatments cure diseases because they are based on scientific research—not supernatural beliefs.
Another common belief is that carrying a lucky charm guarantees success in examinations or competitions. Success, however, is determined by preparation, knowledge, discipline, and confidence. A charm may provide psychological comfort, but it cannot replace hard work or change the outcome on its own.
Science does not ask us to reject every tradition; it asks us to examine every claim through observation, evidence, and reason. When a belief can be tested and consistently verified, it becomes knowledge. When it cannot, it remains a matter of faith or superstition rather than scientific fact.
Separating Practical Heritage from Blind Belief
However, it would be unfair to assume that every traditional practice is meaningless simply because it has been associated with superstition. Throughout history, some customs may have originated from practical observations, even if people later explained them through supernatural beliefs. For example, encouraging cleanliness before entering a place of worship or advising people to avoid unnecessary travel during severe storms could have promoted hygiene and safety, regardless of the beliefs attached to them. The true value of such practices lies in their practical benefits, not in claims of magical or supernatural powers.
This distinction is where science and critical thinking become essential. Science encourages us to ask why a practice works. If a custom produces measurable, repeatable benefits, it deserves appreciation for those reasons. If no reliable evidence supports its claimed supernatural effects, then the belief should be questioned, no matter how old or popular it may be. Respecting tradition and applying reason are not opposing ideas; together, they allow us to preserve what is beneficial while letting go of what lacks evidence.
The Psychological Mechanics of Belief
If scientific knowledge is more accessible than ever before, why do superstitions continue to exist? The answer lies not in a lack of intelligence, but in human psychology. During times of uncertainty, fear, or stress, people naturally seek comfort and certainty. Superstitions often provide a sense of control over situations that seem unpredictable. Family traditions, cultural influences, and repeated exposure to certain beliefs also make them difficult to abandon. Furthermore, when a coincidence appears to confirm a superstition, people tend to remember that one incident while overlooking the countless times the belief proved false. This tendency strengthens superstitions even when reliable evidence is absent.

Ultimately, science and superstition represent two different ways of understanding the world. Science encourages questioning, experimentation, and evidence, while superstition relies on assumptions that cannot be consistently verified. This does not mean we must reject every tradition; rather, we should understand the reasons behind our customs and preserve those that promote health, safety, compassion, and social harmony. A society truly progresses not by abandoning its heritage, but by combining cultural wisdom with scientific thinking.
