Recently, I have been noticing a significant rise in the usage of AI. AI-generated reels circulate across social apps, particularly on Instagram. But I wondered: is there a hidden cost, not just in getting replaced in your job, but on the environment?
Thatβs when I found out AI consumes around 770 billion litres of freshwater annuallyβgreater than the total global consumption of bottled water that same year! Which means, for every 20 prompts, approximately 500 ml of water is used. The problem is people being unbothered. By 2030, global AI data center power demand is projected to grow by 160%.
Iβm not saying stop using AI entirely. Use it for medicine, translation, and disaster alerts. But for a funny caption? No. Before every prompt, ask: βIs this worth a glass of water?β What matters is real, raw, human connection over an AI bot trying to be factually true.
The Global Water Footprint of Digital Infrastructure
India’s available freshwater per person has dropped to barely 1,100 litres per dayβwell below the recommended minimum. Across Africa, roughly 230 million people face water scarcity today. Meanwhile, AI’s water footprint could more than double by 2030, rising from roughly 765 billion litres last year to over 1,200 billion litres.
That is freshwater we could have used to drink, to grow food, and to help wildlife. Instead, we are pouring it into server racks to generate pointless reels and deepfakes.
India’s Groundwater Crisis vs. Data Center Evaporation
Let me talk about my own country. India holds 18% of the world’s population but only 4% of its freshwater. By 2050, our water demand will exceed supply by 50%. Already, 21 citiesβincluding Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennaiβare racing towards zero groundwater. Every year, 200,000 Indians die from inadequate access to clean drinking water.
Meanwhile, a single AI data center can evaporate 1.5 million litres of water per day, which is enough for 30,000 villagers. That is not progress.
Reclaiming Human Connection and Creativity
The solution is simple. Pick up a pen instead of typing a prompt. Paint something ugly with your own hands. Record your real laugh, your real stutter. Human work costs zero litres of water. It is slow, messy, and alive.
Now close your eyes and imagine this: a world where every animal drinks from clean rivers, where elephants, tigers, and kingfishers never go thirsty. A world where every child turns on a tap and gets safe water. A world with no deforestation, where forests stand tall, where birds nest and trees breathe. That world is possible. Every pointless AI prompt steals from that dream.
So, before your next prompt, pause. Draw a silly picture, use your creativity, refer to books for answers, or ask a real human. Write a terrible poem and send it to someone you love. Human acts save freshwater.
