Our environment consists of biodiversity that’s what we learned in our schools. When was the last time you saw a firefly or a sparrow? Nowdays they are quite hard to spot in my opinion. Why ? While us humans are building skyscrapers roads and cities these species of animals , birds and insects found no place in our society . They suffer from habitat loss, pollution , poaching and climate change . Zoological diversity is the backbone of ecological resilience . Without them ecosystem will collapse , threatening food security , climate stability and our well being. Beyond these environmental services, animal life provides immense economic and survival value to humanity by fueling global industries like ecotourism, managed fisheries, and sustainable agriculture. Ultimately, fauna ensures global food security by providing essential protein sources, advances modern healthcare through pharmaceutical research, and supplies raw materials like wool and silk, making the conservation of animal biodiversity a fundamental necessity for our collective future.

73% decline in average size of global wildlife populations in just 50 years reveals a “system in peril” revealed by Amy Fallah’s WWF LPR report in 2024 . Report reveals WWF’s flagship Living Planet Report reveals sharp decline in monitored wildlife population with steepest record in Latin America and the Caribbean (95%), Africa (76%) and Asia-Pacific (60%) , North America (39%) and Europe and Central Asia (39%).

Living Planet Index, provided by Zoological Society of London , tracks almost 35,000 vertebrate populations of 5,495 species from 1907-2020 reveals decline is in freshwater populations (85%), terrestrial (69%) and marine (56%).Habitat degradation and loss, driven primarily by our food system, is the most reported threat in each region, followed by overexploitation, invasive species and disease. Other threats include climate change. LPI is an early warning indicator for extinction risk and helps us understand the health of ecosystems. When a population falls below a certain level, that species may not be able to perform its usual role within the ecosystem – whether that’s seed dispersal, pollination, grazing, nutrient cycling or the many other processes that keep ecosystems functioning.

Drivers of Biological Diversity Loss

This data showcases us the harmful effect of human activities- Human activities are the leading drivers of the rapid decline in global biological diversity. The primary threats to ecosystems and species fall into five main categories:

  • Habitat Loss and Fragmentation: The conversion of wild spaces for agriculture, urbanization, and infrastructure destroys natural homes. Forests, wetlands, and grasslands are cleared, leaving wildlife with nowhere to live, feed, or reproduce.
  • Overexploitation: Unsustainable levels of hunting, fishing, and harvesting deplete populations faster than they can reproduce. Overfishing in marine ecosystems and the illegal wildlife trade are prime examples.
  • Climate Change: Rising global temperatures, shifting weather patterns, and ocean acidification alter habitats beyond what many species can tolerate. Coral bleaching and shifting migration ranges are direct consequences of a warming planet.
  • Pollution: The introduction of toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and plastics into air, soil, and water poisons wildlife. Nutrient runoff from fertilizers also creates massive “dead zones” in oceans and lakes by causing rapid algae blooms.
  • Invasive Species: Non-native organisms introduced to new environments (often via global trade and travel) can outcompete, prey upon, or introduce fatal diseases to native species, drastically disrupting local food webs.

But should we stop development to solve this issue? No, it showcases the need of sustainable development . Core Strategies for Achieving Balance:

  • Strategic Urban Planning: Integrating natural ecosystems (e.g., green spaces, native plantings) directly into neighborhoods to mitigate the impacts of housing expansion and population growth.
  • Community-Driven Conservation: Connecting ecological preservation with economic benefits by incentivizing local, value-added industries (e.g., eco-tourism or sustainably sourced regional brands).
  • Sustainable Infrastructure Siting: Ensuring that new energy projects—including renewables—are sited wisely to avoid high-conservation-value lands, wildlife habitats, and carbon sinks.
  • Robust Ecological Policies: Enforcing compensatory afforestation and advanced satellite monitoring of natural resources to offset the impacts of unavoidable commercial development.

Why the Balance Matters

Effective management of natural resources is essential for preserving the environment’s resilience while meeting basic human needs. Without deliberate planning, rapid human growth can lead to overexploitation, pollution, and severe biodiversity loss, which ultimately compromise the ecosystems that sustain human health and economies

  • Establish Protected Areas: Expand national parks, marine reserves, and wildlife corridors to secure safe breeding and feeding grounds.
  • Rewilding: Reintroduce keystone species (e.g., wolves, beavers) to naturally restore degraded ecosystems and food webs.
  • Reforestation & Conservation: Implement strict policies to prevent deforestation, wetland drainage, and coastal degradation.

Are some of the steps government all over the world are working on but how can we contribute at individual level?

  • Awareness and compassion: Learning and contributing to protect local species of flora and fauna. Chipko movement in India done in 1973.
  • Promote coexistence: Reduce human and animals at local level by educating people. Example-Hargila Army, an all-female grassroots conservation initiative led by wildlife biologist Dr. Purnima Devi Barman. Dedicated to protecting the endangered Greater Adjutant Stork (locally known as the hargila or “bone-swallower”), the movement operates primarily in the Kamrup district and surrounding areas of Assam.
  • Plant Native Vegetation: Add native trees, shrubs, and flowers to your garden. They provide essential food and safe shelter for local birds, insects, and mammals.
  • Avoid Harmful Chemicals: Minimize or eliminate the use of synthetic herbicides and pesticides. These hazardous pollutants wash into streams, kill native pollinators, and poison wildlife.
  • Support Ecological Restoration: Participate in local tree-planting drives or wetland clean-ups to rebuild destroyed or fragmented habitats in your region.

Are some of the things that people should do to support the environment and local wildlife.

Global Policies and Conservation Benchmarks

Some of the policies adopted by govt. all over the world to protect animals and forests-

  • India’s Project Tiger: Initiated in 1973, this targeted conservation program expanded tiger reserves across the country. It has successfully revived the endangered tiger population, which has steadily grown, cementing one of the world’s most effective species-specific recovery efforts Project Tiger.
  • Rwanda’s Kwita Izina & Reforestation: Through strict anti-poaching laws, community-led conservation, and the annual Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony, Rwanda has significantly boosted its mountain gorilla populations. Additionally, the nation has achieved a massive nationwide reforestation push Kwita Izina.
  • Brazil’s Amazon Soy Moratorium: Initiated in 2006, this industry-led agreement pledges major agricultural companies not to buy soy grown on newly deforested land in the Amazon. It is widely credited with drastically reducing deforestation linked to soy expansion.
  • The Global Ivory Ban (CITES): Driven by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), this international treaty-alongside coordinated domestic closures, notably in China—banned the commercial international trade of elephant ivory, severely crippling global poaching networks.

Development at the cost of environment is not a fair exchange. There is a need of balance the balance which ensures development without harming the forests and our neighbours (flora and fauna).

Youth Agency and Sustainable Futures

Young people hold the key to a sustainable future. As the leaders, innovators, and decision-makers of tomorrow, they have the power to drive positive change through their actions and ideas. Sustainable development is not just about protecting the environment; it is about creating a world where economic progress, social equality, and environmental conservation go hand in hand. By reducing waste, conserving resources, supporting eco-friendly practices, and raising awareness in their communities, youth can become powerful agents of change. Every small step—whether planting a tree, saving water, or promoting renewable energy—contributes to a healthier planet. When young minds embrace sustainability today, they help build a greener, fairer, and more prosperous world for future generations.Youth play a vital role in shaping the future of our world, which is why it is extremely important for them to understand the concept of sustainable development. Sustainable development means meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. As young people are the future leaders, scientists, teachers, entrepreneurs, and decision-makers, their awareness and actions can significantly influence the health of the environment, economy, and society. Today, the world faces many challenges such as climate change, pollution, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, water scarcity, and excessive waste generation. Understanding sustainable development helps youth recognize these problems and encourages them to adopt responsible habits such as conserving energy, reducing plastic use, recycling waste, planting trees, and protecting natural resources. It also teaches them the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental protection and social well-being. Through education and awareness, young people can become active participants in creating innovative solutions for global issues. They can influence their families, friends, and communities to make environmentally friendly choices and support sustainable practices. Moreover, youth involvement in sustainable development promotes responsible citizenship, critical thinking, and leadership skills. By understanding the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), young people can contribute to building a more equal, healthy, and prosperous world. Their creativity, energy, and willingness to embrace change make them powerful agents of transformation. If today’s youth are equipped with knowledge about sustainability, they can help create a future where economic progress, social justice, and environmental protection exist together in harmony. Therefore, educating and empowering youth about sustainable development is essential for ensuring a better quality of life for present and future generations and for achieving long-term global sustainability.
